What is Labiaplasty ?

Labiaplasty term is most commonly used to describe the surgical procedure of reduction of the size of labia minora. Labia minora are the mucosal tissue folds located on both sides of the vaginal orifice.

Female external genitelia may be of various shapes, sizes and colours. There is no certain description of the normal vulva.

However recently there is a trend of increase in the number of female patients applying for genital esthetic procedures. Women may want to change the look of their external genitelia for various reasons.

• Patients under 18 years of age (unless there is a medical indication.),
• Patients with serious chronic health conditions such as uncontrolled diabetes, heart disease, hypertension etc,
• Patients with unrealistic expectations for their genital area.

How is labiapasty performed?

Labioplasty is mostly performed as an outpatient procedure. It can be either performed in an office setting under local anesthesia or in a hospital or clinic under general anesthesia.

There are several surgical techniques for a labioplasty procedure. The most commonly performed labiaplasty surgical techniques are:

• Wedge resection,
• Trimming labiaplasty.

Trimming labiaplasty is mostly performed over wedge resection due to decreased risk of complications. There are an infinite number of other incisions possible for a labiaplasty procedure because every patient's surgery should be tailored according to her anatomy and her specific needs.

Is aneshesia necessary for a labioplasty?

Labioplasty can be performed under local anesthesia. But most patients prefer sedation combined with local anesthesia, since they sleep and dot feel anything during the procedure.

What are the benefits of a labiaplasty?

Benefits of a labiaplasty procedure can be summarised as:

• Reduced size of the labia minora so that they do not sag between the labia majora,
• Improved symmetry of labia minora,
• Improved self-esteem,
• Improved genital hygiene,

What are the possible complications of a labiaplasty?

Like all other surgical procedures, labiaplasty has certain risks which are very rarely seen in expert clinics. The complications of a labiaplasty procedure can be summarised as:

• Labiaplasty infection,
• Labiaplasty hematoma,
• Wound dehishence,
• Unsatisfactory scarring.

Does labiaplasty reduce feeling?

Labiaplasty is a safe straightforward procedure that does not reduce sensation. It is normal to have temporary numbness in the surgical site after every procedure but because of heterogenous neural network, there will be no permanent loss of sensation after surgery.

Preoperative instructions for labiaplasty:

• Quit smoking if possible,
• Stop taking blood thinner medications (like aspirin and NDAID’s) and supplements. Only take medications prescribed by your doctor,
• Do not eat or drink anything 12 hours prior to surgery, but you should take your necessary medications with a small sip of water in the morning prior to your surgery (like heart, thyroid, blood pressure medications),
• Have loose comfortable clothing with you,
• Arrange someone to drive you home after surgery because you will not be allowed to drive that day,
• Take a few days off of work.

Post-operative instructions for labiaplasty:

• You will be given ice-packs at the clinic and you should put them on the sterile gauze covering surgical site,according to a 10 minutes on,10 minutes off regimen to decrease swelling and discomfort,
• You will be allowed to take a shower in 48 hours,
• Each time after visiting the bathroom, spray some water on the vulva and keep it dry afterwards,
• Do not rub the surgical site,
• Do not carry anything heavy during the first 4-6 weeks,
• Do not exercise ,use a tampon or have sex in the first 4-6 weeks after surgery,
• Call your doctor if you have significant bleeding from the incisions, have fever over 38 degrees, foul smelling drainage or redness on the labia or intractable pain and swelling on the labia unresponsive to pain-killers.

How is labiaplasty recovery?

• It is normal to have some bloody or blood –tinged drainage from the incisions,
• It is normal to have swelling and bruising of the labia,
• Try to have as much rest as possible, lying on your back during the few days after surgery,
• You may take pain-killers prescribed by your doctor during labiaplasty recovery,
• Do not miss your control visits after surgery.
